Gatka is an ancient form of self-defense and training, going back to early times of the devties (hindu demi-gods). It can involve movements which use no weapons, and there are many weapons that can we used. Examples are khanda (double edged sword), chakar (throwing disc, circle), various hidden swords in the Bunga (turban),sticks (Fari-soothi),clubs,maces,axes,guns even.
It involves strategy and deep thinking, common sense, and lots of meditation. The hymns of Guru Gobind Singh, in the Sri Gur Dasam and Sarbloh granth, explain the nature of weapons, the need of war for righteousness, and inspire Bir ras-warrior spirit as opposed to Shant-ras (peace sahaj). All this is part and parcel of Shaster Vidya.
Today most Gatka is showy, and is just for display purposes, only a select few people know gupt(hidden) movements and forms based on animals. Like the bull, snake, lion etc rather like Kung Fu. May Guru bless us with more knowlegde and some people to teach..akaaaaalaa!!
