I would rather not say that it is a sin to masturbate. Sin is a very strong judgemental term most often used in Christian termonology.
Rather, it is a waste of energy to masturbate. There are more effective ways to focus yourself that are healthier and more constructive outlets for you.
Refer to the section on masturbation. This has been answered very throughly about the physical and emotional effects of it, and how to redirect yourself.
