Summary of Question:life after death / Sucide
Category:General Sikhism

I have been thinking about death often in the past weeks? What happens to a Sikh upon and after death? Some believe that the soul is still around until the Path Da Phog is carried out? It only goes on its journey after that. IN Sikhism, what are our beliefs on such matters? Where can I find the answers?

What about those who commit sucide? What happens to their souls when they die? Can they ever redeem themselves? Or can the living relatives do something for these souls?

It doesn't matter if you are a Sikh or not, what happens to you after death is determined by your karma, how you lived in life. If you have a meditative, reverent mind, you will have a much better understanding of what is happpening to you as you leave your physical body. If you spend your live loving Maya, you will be very confused and not know what to do. Often those people do end up staying around the earth long after death. They are called ghosts.
Suicide is very heavy karma, because you are destroying the temple God gave you. Every case is different, but in general it sets your soul back a lot in the journey to liberation. Eventually every soul returns to Wahe Guru, it's just a matter of how much time and pain before that. Your prayers will help.
