Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fathe,

Dear Jasdeep ji,
I can really relate to your situation, i am te eldest child in the family in a low Sikh populated Australia. Going to a school, where most people had not seen a sikh before was tough. A few people used to tease, others, questioned, and i am also guilty of getting upset at the fact and felt anger and hatred for the people and also for my religion. This anger arose because i didnt have any knowledge on why i follow my beliefs. knowledge is power, and that power will be able to assist you in coping with your problems better. It is quite common for Sikh youth to get offended when not having an answer.

We have an identity, a God given identity, that includes hair, and a different uniform of dress. I've learn to cope well with people who ask by seeking knowledge on the subject. Knowldge is power and if you have enough knowledge, you will feel proud when a person asks you a question on why you keep your hair.

Basically, we dont permanently alter any part of our body because God has created humans as perfect beings. He has designed our bodies in his own way, and by us altering our bodies, eg.. cutting hair, peircing, etc. are we trying to better the creation created by god? Even if it means mutilating our bodies in the process? People can argue that hair is non living tissue. If so, how can hair judge its length? try shaving an eyebrow, it wll grow back to match the other eyebrows length and cease growing further.

Christians belive that God created humans in his image, we all know that God doesnt have an image, he is formless, but who are we to argue what other faiths believe. If in their case, God DID create us in his image, why alter the image, God is supreme, shouldnt we aim to be the best we can?

I hope these few points helped in understanding why we keep our hair, there are heaps more but if you'd like to discuss further, email me at sundeepsingh@ikonkar.com

Learn to understand why people differentiate you from them, and teach them why you are different and give them an understanding by telling them. This should make them think twice before taunting you, and you also may gain their friendship after communicating with them in a friendly manner!

Hope i helped
