It is very simple. A Gurmukh is one who bases his life and actions on the words of the Guru; i.e., one within whom the Guru is always spontaneously present and acting. A Gurmukh's actions flow from Truth and Compassion. The Guru flows through him.
A Manmukh is one who follows his or her own mind. A Manmukh's actions are based on his or her own needs, thoughts and desires.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji describes the Gurmukh in Japji Sahib:
From the Gurmukh comes the Naad.
From the Gurmukh comes knowledge.
Through the Gurmukh we stay merged.
The Guru is the form of God that you can meditate on, imagine, and love.
The Guru is the mother, Maya.
When I know it I can't say it, Words are useless.
The Guru has given me one understanding:
All souls are gifts of the One. May I never forget Him!
