Sat Siri Akal.
Dear One,
The question of marriage is the question of your future happiness. And to be honest -whether or not you are happy in an arranged marriage versus a love marriage is really a matter of chance. You need to know who you are before you know what type of mate you want to attract into your life. What's important to you? Where are you headed in your future? Because when you marry, that person is going to be with you as you walk towards your destiny, and you want to make sure it is someone who can be a true partner and friend to your soul, to your life's purpose. Those are the types of questions you would need to ask of any future partner - whether from a different religion that you have fallen in love with, or from your own religion who your parents have introduced you to.
Is it a sin to marry someone from a different religion? No. That's something that parents say to scare you into doing what they want you to do. Is it a good idea to marry someone from a different religion? That depends on how important it is to you to be a Sikh, how important it is to you that your children are raised Sikh and how strong the communication is between you and your spouse. It is possible, but it isn't easy. Which is why it is so very important that you know yourself, first. Because when you know who you are and what is important to you in life, selecting the right mate will be a much clearer decision.
Hope this helps.
All love,
GPK
