The reason why I think that this exists is mainly because of human nature and partly because of organized religion.
It is definitely human nature for wanting to belong in a group. Since a group of people go to church/ temple together, they like to separate themselves from others in order for them to feel togetherness. Another one is the way we organize. Humans naturally organize everything that they come across to make things easier. They organized the world into countries, into states, cities, and so forth. They also organize with the type of belief.
Many will say that after all, all religions are basically the same, yes some of them are, but some of them are not. Buddhism, for example, is of two major types. They both believe in Nirvana vs. Reincarnation as an afterlife, but one is theist and one is atheist. Penecostal Christian, another example, believe that the ONLY way you can get to heaven is through Christ. If you do not accept Jesus as your saviour then you will definitely go to hell. Now things like this produce differences, especially proselytizing (missionaries, etc.). It makes people feel different.
That is why people are different from each other. What ever the Guru Granth Sahib says about equality is only known by a few people, probably <40% of Sikhs. That is not a lot of people. Sometimes religions create little lines between people, for example in the Koran, it says that if a Muslim marries a non-muslim, it is considered illegal. Little things like that make all the difference, and as the knowledge passes on w/o proof, it becomes less of a knowledge and more of a rumor, and we all know how strong they can be.
