It is unfortunate but true that sometimes people can go through the ritual of reciting path, but they have no love in their hearts and so, at the end of the day, it becomes an empty experience for them. The Guru says in many different ways that love is the key to all of this. It isn't the Name that will heal you. It's the love of the Name that will heal you. There is a line in the Guru, forgive me - I'm terrible at remembering page numbers - but it says something like: those who sing and recite Gurbani without any love in their hearts are like people who sit down to a sumptous feast without tasting anything. The food may be there for them, but they cannot enjoy it.
For you, though, it is important to stay away from judgement. If you do have love in you when you meditate and chant - that is God's gift to you and Guru's blessing. For someone who has not much love, but is going through the ritual - understand that at least going through the ritual is better than nothing and, in time, by the Guru's hand, reciting path will help her shift and change. Sometimes, these things happen slowly. But having a discipline is still something blessed by God and will bear its own fruit in God's time and God's way. So do not look at someone and see what they are not. Bless them for what they are and be grateful for the understanding the Guru has bestowed upon you to see what you see. If you really want to be helpful, treat your mother-in-law with highest love so that she can learn the experience of love through your touch.
Good luck to you.
All love.
