First off I'd like to give congrats to "Jessica" for learning about Sikhi. Although I must say if you are considering baptism please make sure you are prepared fully so you gain full spiritual benefit - many people who take it early get no enormous benefit, whilst those who have prepared undergo a full rebirth and are literally intoxicated on naam for days, even weeks after
Anyway Id like to comment on the bleaching of hair. I agree that Sikhi is not a DOS and DONTS religion but once you take amrit there is a code of conduct (rehat maryada) which MUST be followed. Amrit is not to be taken lightly, it is one of the most powerful things you will ever experience in your life. There are 4 H's which must be avoided after Amrit, if one commits one of these then they are no longer a Sikh but a "Patit" or fallen one. These are Hajamat, Haram, Halalo and Hukkah.
I take the meaning of Hajamat to not just be removal of hair but mutilation of it also. Dying of dharis is also forbidden as an Amritdhari and so obviously is dying facial hair.
I believe it is not so much the action that is important but the intentions behind it. People dye their hair so they make it look like it isnt there, just like people cut their hair so it isnt there. I see no difference, other than the first is trying to "get round the system" so to speak.
I agree with the mods that it is a confidence thing. I see alot of self conscious Singhnees who think they look sooooo baaaaaad with some titchy amount of facial hair - its not like they have a dhari or anything! Most women blow it totally out of proportion - you can still be beautiful even if you have a tiny bit of hair. I recently saw a Daughter of the Guru in full Bana w/ Keski and she looked much more beautiful and had a spiritual glow about her much more powerful then the weak willed women who plaster makeup on their face in a poor attempt to appear beautiful.
In the end our bodies will turn to dust and we will wonder why we spent so much time changing something which was going to be destroyed soon anyway. Respect and maintain your body, exercise lots and keep clean, but dont go OTT and start getting anorexic, removing hair to look like a western gore, or wearing makeup! Concentrate on the eternal soul instead.
