I was wondering what sikhism has to say on the subject of masturbation. Is it mentioned in any text? Is it tolerated?

You will be better off if you don't do it.
It may be mentioned in SGGS, I'm not aware of it. I will tell you from the Yogic teachings what it says.
It is harmful to the pituitary gland, the master gland of the body. When sexual stimulation happens without a physical partner, the pituitary has to compensate and it creates mental and physical damage. It is subtle, not like going blind, but it makes everything in life harder. You will feel sour about life.
The semen itself is also precious. It lubricates the nervous system. Even with a spouse it is recommended to not have sex too often. Once a month is the ideal. You will find if you meditate a lot, your desire for sex will be a lot more under control.
