Most people consider themselves to be of the faith of the family that they are born to. In the case of Guru Nanak, he challanged every faith of the time and taught a new revitalized way of seeing God and living life.
So, there are people who actively practice and pursue their faith and there are those who identify with their faith but do not put anything into practice.
You can call yourself a Sikh. Yet the real beauty and wonder of being a Sikh comes from "seeking after the Truth". The seeking part is an action that gives you the experience and the expansion. Being born a Sikh or not being born a Sikh; anyone can start at anytime. It is the Grace of God that allows you not just to call yourself a Sikh, but to actually become that Seeker that the Guru's talk about as a Sikh of the Guru.
