Summary of Question:What Are The Determining Factors Of An Acceptable Marraige?
Category:Love & Marriage

I have learned from your forum that it is acceptable for a Sikh man to date women that are of different cultural and religious backgrounds. I am a woman who was raised Catholic and I have a good friendship and trusting relationship with a 31 year old Sikh man. I am interested in developing this relationship further, and I believe he is as well. We spend time together in groups and share similar interests and values. He often makes jokes about developing our relationship, but I do not know if he is using humor as a way to determine my interest by my reaction, or if he would truly see this as a worthy pursuit. My question is: is this a valuable pursuit that could result in marriage, or would our relationship be limited to friendly dating? I am worried that this man will not have enough respect or regard for me as a woman since I am not a Sikh, though he has never treated me in a disrespectful way. Would I not be consdered for marriage because of my ethnicity and religion? Any and all information you cou

ld provide regarding this relationship would be a tremendous help. Thank You.

Dating and marrying are very different events. For a Sikh man, he often will date and then marry a girl chosen by his parents.

I do believe that there is respect and consideration among Sikh's for women of any faith or cultural background. But you will have to become quite educated in the ways of the Sikhs to be considered marriageable. I think that you would want to maintain your graceful distance and get to know him and his family before letting your guard down emotionally or physically.

If you are interested in marriage, then study about Sikhism, try it's practices and see if you would like to be part of this practice for the rest of your life. You would not only be marrying a man, but a new culture, another way of eating and a whole new way of looking at life and famliy

How interested are you in learning about this man and his spiritual way of life? To a Sikh, his religion and culture are so different from our Western ways.
