Summary of Question:Line in the SGGS that I don't understand
Category:General Sikhism
Date Posted:Sunday, 7/09/2000 11:12 PM MDT

I was reading the english translation of SGGS, and I came to pg.1289. The part about flesh confused me, especially this part:"They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts. They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat". I was just wondering that because we are produced from flesh that there is nothing wrong with eating flesh. If you could please give some clarity.

Guruji always pokes, provokes, confronts and elevates people who do things from rote; i.e., from habit or ritual without understanding and experiencing the reality of their actions. This passage pokes people who refuse meat out of blindness, rote and ritual, not out of conscious awareness. There are many such passages in the Guru. Many of them refer to Brahmin rituals (such as the eating square), habitual pilgrammage makers, people who dress in "holy" garb but have not awakened their consciousness through Naam as well as yogis who perform yogic proctices with no inner understanding.
