Dear one, your question is very excellant and deep.
The idea that a God or personality exists outside of our selves is what you are referring to. For example, the Buddhist's do not believe in a God personality and they never refer to God. Yet they are very spiritual.
Forget about God as an old man in the sky or any other person place or thing.
'G' stands for generating power of the universe
'O' stands for organizing power of the universe
'D' stands for the delivering (or destroying) power of the universe
All the power of the universe that you cannot describe and that you cannot explain or understand is G-O-D.
To understand it most clearly is to read the Jaj Ji Sahib of Guru Nanak Dev ji. There is a very nice translation in Sikhnet....http.www.sikhnet.com/s/gurugranthsahib. It is under English translation. You can actually use it as a daily meditation. Read it daily out loud...so that you can hear yourself speaking...and listen to your words. Do it for 40 to 90 days. It will give you the understanding of life and mastery.
