Sat Shri Akal

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

First of all, I would like to thank you and others associated with this website for doing an invaluable service for the sikh community. You are doing a great service and I hope you continue with your priceless input in helping out fellow members with their issues and much needed relevant information.

I am a 24 year old Indo-Canadian Sikh male living in British Columbia. I was born in an agricultural family in Punjab, India. I consider myself very fortunate to be born in a Sikh family with such a great lifestyle having unique culture and tradition. As I look back in time to my childhood, it was truly a heavanly and content experience through the blessings of guru ji. I came to Canada when I was 9 years old. I miss all those years I would have spent in Punjab but I shouldn't ponder on what wasn't meant to be.

Anyway, I just went back to India and got married. I believe I found a wonderful companion to share my remaining life with. She is still in Punjab awaiting her visa. She has similar values and morals as I do and we really connect together in a deep sense. I love her very much and she loves me even more. We both try to recite the guru's words on a regular basis with all the love and devotion. I truly find peace of mind when I am connected with the word of the guru. It is like nothing else in this world. You forget all your sorrow, pain, and distractions from the world and meditate with Akal Purkh, the Master of the universe, and wish well for all humanity. I just wish that through His grace I can engage in simran with more love, devotion, strength, and courage every single day.

I am in a kind of dilemna at this period of my life. I always have thoughts in my mind if I should become a 'true sikh' or an amrit dharee sikh but I do not want to rush into it because I do not want to be incomplete and not be up for the ultimate challenge which is to begin on the path to merge with our Father through daily simran, and having love for all humanity. Basically doing exactly what the SGGS says and following the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his given way of life for a Sikh to abide by. I want to fulfil, in every way, what our guru wants us to live like and set an example for the world which is extremely difficult these days living in western society. Can you please help me make this very important life changing decision. When is someone really ready to take amrit? I know you have a busy schedule. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work...

(REPLY) Sat Nam. You are indeed blessed to be living with your attitude of gratitude and appreciation for all that God and Guru have given you so far. Taking Amrit is a decision that only you can make. If it is truly your aspiration to give your head totally to the Guru, then you will take Amrit and receive the blessing of that commitment. Have you discussed this with with your wife? Will she also want to make that commitment? Meanwhile, you can each and both live as closely as possible according to Guru's teachings, and pray for guidance in this matter. No other person can decide for you. Taking Amrit is much more than a ritual, it is a profound, real blessing that you receive. It is entirely up to you when and if you choose it. It is a matter between you and the Guru! May God bless you and Guru guide you always in all ways. SP
